Strategy and Style

Collaboration
Democracies are sometimes used to exclude input and expressions of concern from some stakeholders, under the guise of them being the minority, so therefore it’s OK to ignore. This is a con of the democratic process.  I will work towards blending democracy with a more flexible process that encourages participation and input and allows for creativity to come up with better solutions, and simultaneously building trust and a sense of connection, which will then be used during implementation of changes the island community has decided to make. I have extensive experience in how this can work harmoniously, while not compromising the rigors and structures of the democratic principles, a win-win for everyone.

Creative Brainstorming and Implementation
Compromise is sometimes necessary, but it should be the last option, not the starting point.  A compromise is starting with something and whittling away parts of it till it’s acceptable.  It results in something smaller and more restricted than what is needed.  A consensus model principle is that when a group works together creatively the ideas born from inspiration created in unison can come up with surprising solutions that are much more than choosing one of two or more ideas/proposals, then reducing it through compromise (in order to get buy-in).
Instead of starting discussions from the point of peoples already formed positions on topics, consensus/conflict resolution models propose starting discussions with sharing interests.
Example of interests: We want green living cover on the landscape.
Example of position: No trees can be cut down
Brainstorm of possible solutions if starting with the interest:  Living roof’s, planting trees, creative trimming, incorporating trees in building design, addressing invasive species negatively affecting natural flora, etc.

The more we get entrenched and attached to our position, the more conflict we will have with others in a group.  The more we spend time understanding every stakeholder’s interest, the better chance there is of finding a position that everyone not only can live with, but actually participate in implementing and be excited about because they can clearly see how it can fulfill their interests.  Once we all know everyone’s interests, it’s much easier to build solutions that have something for everyone (not necessarily the same for each).

Values
I don’t believe in “good and bad” people, only people with different experiences and outlook.
I have tolerance for respectful disagreement.
I do not have tolerance for bigotry, name-calling, obstructionism, or lack of respect.
I value forgiveness and strive to recognize and admit my own shortcomings and errors.
